Removable Orthodontic Appliances in Ballina
Orthodontic treatment usually starts between the ages of 7-9, when the first four upper front teeth have come through.
Some Types of Removable Appliances Include:
Retainers
Removable appliances are more commonly known as a retainer or a plate.
Retainers/plates are often used when there are front teeth that protrude, teeth crossbite or upper/lower arches are too narrow.
The goal is to relocate your child’s teeth into a position to reduce the chances of injury and regulate jaw growth.
A plate is often worn after braces are removed to maintain teeth alignment.
After braces and sometimes during early treatment, you may need to wear a retainer to hold your teeth in their new position.
There are two main types of retainers:
Bonded Retainers
These are more commonly used on lower teeth and are glued in place to ensure teeth remain stable.
Clear Retainers
Also known as a plate, clear retainers are the most common type for the upper teeth. These should be worn approximately 12 hours a day, generally while sleeping.
Mouthguards
Protect your precious smile by wearing a mouthguard playing contact sports or any activity that may put your teeth at risk. And yes, you still need to wear a mouthguard, even if you wear braces.
Custom-made mouthguards provide the best fit. They are moulded to suit your mouth, making it more comfortable, and easier to talk and breathe. As your teeth move, we are also able to adjust your custom mouthguard to be a perfect fit.
While there’s no 100% guarantee a mouthguard will protect you from all dental injuries, but it will greatly lessen the degree of serious injury!
Taking care of your mouthguard
All mouthguards should be carefully lifted over the front edge of your braces when you are taking them in or out to avoid damage to the wire or brackets.
When not in use, store your mouthguard in a protective box. Avoid leaving it in direct sunlight such as on the car dashboard or hot surfaces like the hot water system.
You don’t have to have braces to make an appointment for a custom-made mouthguard.
